The Difference Between Soy and Store Bought (Paraffin) Candles
Most of us are very familiar with Paraffin candles whether we realize it or not. Box name stores like Walmart and Target sell these types of candles. Many of us purchase these not realizing there are better options out there. One of those better options is Soy candles. While more expensive initially, these candles make up for their price point in terms of quality and in most cases are cheaper in the long run.
Soy Candles Burn Cleaner Than Paraffin Candles
A candle made from soy wax and cotton wicks burns cleaner with very little soot released as the candle burns. While no candle made in the US has lead, they can have zinc. Zinc wicks are not toxic like lead, but they are usually found in store bought candles and will produce more soot than cotton or hemp wicks. In addition, Soy candles are non-toxic since they are made from a vegetable oil, and will not release toxins into the air as they burn, unlike paraffin candles.
"Paraffin candles release a petro-carbon soot that stains your walls, furniture and is circulated through your air ducts. This soot, according to the American Lung Association, contains 11 documented toxins, 2 of which are known carcinogens — toluene and benzene." Source
Soy Candles are Longer Lasting Than Paraffin Candles
While Soy candles usually cost more than paraffin candles, they typically last 50% longer than store bought candles. The reason behind this is because soy candles have a slower burning time and a cooler burning temperature thanks to the soybean-based wax. Soy wax is also biodegradable unlike petrol based paraffin, making it an investment that benefits both yourself and the environment. For this reason, Soy Candles easily justify the higher price tag.
Soy Candles Have Better Scents than Paraffin Candles
Because Soy candles burn slower than paraffin candles, the scent is gradually released, so there won't be an immediate wave of strong scent. This creates a more pleasant atmosphere for people and can save some from the headaches caused by paraffin candles.
